I have a 1998 Mercury Mystique (aka Mercury Mistake) that has an AST Ultra Start 1275XR that was working for the several years but has given up the ghost. All the electrical to the car still works so, I'm guessing the module is defective since the car won't crank. How do I bypass this defective module? Right now, the car is stuck at a shopping mall parking lot so I need to just start it and get it back home before attempting to fix it.
Can I just unplug all the plugs and go or is there something else I need to do?

You will need to find find the module and unplug it. Depending on which module was used, you may also have to reconnect a few wires that may have been cut. Reconnect the wires and you should be good to go.

I believe the 1275XR is just a remote start. The only way it would prevent the car from starting is if they installed a starter kill or anti-grind relay. Neither of those is commonly done for a remote start install. It sound to me like you have another problem.
If the problem is related to a starter kill relay or anti-grind relay staying active, then unplugging the module should allow the car to start. There is a slight chance a relay added to interupt the start wire went bad, but the chances of that happening are extremely rare. I probably saw 1 or 2 relays go bad in 8 years of professionally installing. It is possible a connection on the relay came loose, or a butt connector came loose which could cause the problem as well.
