Installing an Avital 4500 remote start system I had on the shelf into a 1995 VW Cabrio. Below is the wiring diagram from the installation manual. Wires from the system are 14 gauge and car's ignition wires are that and bigger. I assume that where the diagram shows a dot, that is a splice? Except where it shows an X and that is a cut. How would you guys suggest making those connections? Strip section of wire and solder in new wire? Then shrink wrap? Cut and solder all together? Use splice device? The install packet has some big but end crimp connectors, but that implies cuts. Just want to get another opinion before I go cutting wires. Thanks.

strip, wrap, solder, and tape works fine for most people. Throw those butt connectors in the trash. Use a good quality tape and you will be fine. 3M Super 33+ is a good tape that a lot of installers like. Should be available at many places like Home Depot. Should be about $5 a roll. The cheap tape out there won't hold up in extreme heat or cold. The starter wire should be the only wire you have to cut.

Sorry I'm a noob. What do you mean by wrap after stripping the wire?

witxp....You wrap the wire you are trying to attach around the wire you are attaching it to.

If you get real crazy throw a 4" cable tie about an inch up the wires for added strength then solder away and of coure tape then.

Used to work for a company who insisted on amalgamating tape + 4" cable ties on EVERY soldered join! Nowadays I cut, Y join one end to new cable about 2" back, solder and heat shrink, then butt join, solder and heat shrink. It will last for ever if you've soldered correctly.
