Will a generic door lock actuator burn up if kept energized?

Looking to use one to engage a lever and keep the lever engaged.(non automotive application)
Only way to do this with a door lock actuator is to keep it energized.

Any other options I can look at?

Do linear actuators stay put once reaching their stop point?

Suggestions welcome.

leaving an actuator energized will mess it up quick. (it keeps on trying to push or pull)

If anything, (u didnt specify the application) try to create a latch like the doorlocks, where it locks and stays locked until you unlock it again.

I can draw a diagram of how doorlocks work if you want to copy that.

not sure about linear actuators.

If you elaborate your purpose, someone can come up with a rig that can work. Alot of us here does custom work.

Yea,thought about some kind of detent for the lever.
Or redesigning the lever to a "cam" type lever.

The application is for a Lawn tractor.
I'm adapting a snowblower that was not designed for this particular tractor.
I've fabbed up mounts already so that's good to go,it's just the "little stuff" I'm working out now.

The actuator I wanted to use was to move the drive belt lever, which inturn moves an idler pully forward or back, tensioning and loosening the
drive belt.

You cant use an actuator at all since the motion is "jerky", (theres one strong pull).
try going with a motor with a pulley or something like that, since you probably want some control.

Well, if i think of something ill post it up,
hopefully someone can chime in with some ideas.

I wanted to use the door lock motor because that's what I had handy.

I'm still looking at other options.

That's though.

How about an electric window motor...lot's of torque,it's reverseable and it stays put once power is disconnected.

I could fab up a lever matching the splines on the window motor shaft.

Might work.

i think a window motor might work (might be hard getting a rig set up)
you can either use a universal type or find a cable type at the junkyard
use a doorlock relay for your reversing polarity so that its more compact

I have used linier actuators to make box lids open and close before, and they stay where you leave it.

Since you have some exp. with lin. actuators, how small do they come.

Do you have a link where I could read up on them?

Thanks for the help gents.
