In my experience, the pin switches tend to rust out and fail to make contact. I only use mercury switches.

I only use stainless ball bearing tilt switch's, i make it mandatory that the buy the switch then put it in for free because the pin switch WILL RUST then there wil be a very bad conection between the 2 points and the switch will fail to work.

I think when it comes down to it, it depends on your location/weather patterns.

if you are afraid of rust, go with something with less metal, like a mercury switch.
Another option is magnetic switches (never tried them so i not sure)

Dry climate here in Texas so we use pin switches with no problems.

Pin switchs are a big no no for us here in Canada!

Magnetic switch are the most recommended.

I personally use pinswitches.  Yes, here in Canada.  I try to locate them as far away from the front of the engine compartment as possible.  Usually on the firewall.  I really haven't had many problems at all.  I was curious though as to any issues people have had with stuff like mercury switches.  If you park on a steep enough hill will your car not start?  Installed one in a bad place and put a screw through the hood?  (Yes, I do know someone who did that.)

Well no big issues as for steep hills so far and no screw trough the hood. LOL
