I'm fixing up an old 60's car and I leave it parked on the street. What I would like is a proximity alarm, one that chirps when someone looks in the window to see if I have a radio worth stealing. I can mount an on/off switch on the dash. Can I just buy the sensor, or do I have to get a module, an alarm and etc? Putts

Everything, that You need:microwave sensor, relay, siren and certainly on\off-switch.

Kola is spot on but I would add a pulse timer relay set for 30 secs to actuate siren for that long when inner zone breached. The relays are required to boost the low current from the sensor,

At least now I know that the chirping comes from the siren, not the sensor! Will any cheapo siren make the chirp? Howie, I was hoping the timer would be in the sensor. Otherwise for me to close the switch on the dash and get out of the car I will have to be pretty speedy. Do you mean get a a pulse timer delay instead of a regular relay, or in addition to it? without one what happens? will it just keep on chirping?

you could use a dash switch combined with your door trigger. You would open the door, flip the switch to on, and then whe you close the door the system arms. When you get into the car by opening the door then it would disarm the system temporarily until you flip the switch on the dash. That is if you just want to warn people away and not acctually protect the vehicle.

Sarcomax is quite right, I didn't about entry exit. You need a relay for the warn away and a pulse time timer for the inner zone. If only a warnaway then you can dispense with the pulse timer and linking a switch to the door contact, you just need a relay and a siren.

I don't think my car is good for stealing (could be, though). Mainly I get passers-by at midnight looking for a radio and will bust the window and dashboard to grab it. That's why I think I just need a chirp. Instead of a siren & relay do you think this would work? https://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96545 I could buy a microwave proximity sensor and replace whatever sensor that comes with it now, maybe save myself a day' s worth of wiring. tom

It might be easier to simply install a red flashing LED in the dash to give the appearance of an alarm. If you are worried about passerbys looking in the car they will surely move on to an easier target if they see a flashing red LED inside your car.

Get a 12v flashing relay with leads from Radio Shack or a similar place. Connect red wire via a 1amp fuse to a 12v+ permanent. Connect the black wire to an ignition circuit. As soon as you turn the key this will extinguish the light.

why not just buy an alarm, probably end up costing less than peice mealing it all together, plus you have starter kill, just in case.
