I have a unique problem that I have never experienced before while doing any remote start.

I installed a Scytek Galaxy 2000RS into an 04 Malibu using the CAN-SL2 bypass module from Crimestopper. The remote start functions work great, locks, starter, etc. The problem I have ran into is that after you remote start it and drive (or let it sit there) and then restart it using the key, the security light comes on and sometimes the car dies after a few seconds...this is with the key! You can remote start it all day, before or after the issue with the key and it will work every time. I can reset the system by pulling and reinstalling the security fuse and then it will start with the key and the light will go out like normal. I have checked all of my connections and everything is going to the correct wire. All my relays work. I followed the instructions exactly when installing the bypass module.

I am really at a loss here. I have trouble shot every avenue I can think of. There is no reason that the Passkey system shouldn't recognize the correct key. If anything, I should be having a problem getting it to recognize the remote starter. Right now, that is the only thing that works right. I did forget to mention that after you remote start it and insert the key, the security light doesn't come on, it only comes on after you start it with the key. (after it has already been remote started)

I will try any suggestions anyone has. I have the customer's car in my shop right now. I installed the same unit in two of his other vehicles on Saturday. One was an 02 Trailblazer, the other was an 07 Corolla. Neither of them are having any issues. I did the Malibu in the middle of the other two.

Please help!!

After I posted this, I went to the Fortin website and found that only version 1.11 will work with an 04 Malibu. (it didn't say this on the Crimestopper website when I was choosing which bypass module to use) I placed an order into Crimestopper and they are shipping me one that is version 1.11. I will be ordering the Flash-Link updater from them as soon as they get them in so this doesn't happen again.

Stupid Malibus and their security! Hopefully this will fix it. I will keep you updated.

I just got my updater in this morning and updated a CANSL2 to the 1.13. Pretty slick and very easy to do. Updater looks like a kids toy though..... clear red plastic with 3 LED's.

I called Crimestopper today to order one of those and they said they weren't getting them in for about a month. They are my distributor for Fortin products. What distributor did you go through? How much are they? (PM me if you don't want everyone to know) I ended up ordering another CAN-SL2 version 1.11. It should be here Thursday.

Thanks for your help!
Joe

Seems strange that it would start with the remote starter if its the wrong module, did you try disconnecting the "ground when running" wire to see if it starts with the key? maybe getting some feedback from somewhere? or does the unit plug into the brain?

I don't think that portion of the firmware changed between the revisions. I think what changed is how it interacts with the other keys. What it seems to be doing is de-programming the keys. There is actually a section in the owners manual on how to add extra keys, so all you have to do is have a dealer or a locksmith cut them for you and you can do the programming. Once I reset the system, it recognizes the keys again so I don't think it is actually de-programming them, that is just how it acts. I will get the updated module on Thursday and will let you know if that was the ticket or not.

Okay, here is an update to the little problem I was having with the 04 Malibu.

Crimestopper sent me the new module and on the outside of the box it said version 1.11. On the module itself it was labeled 1.10. I hooked it up and it made my first issue go away, but the the door locks would not work with the remote starter or at the switches. The factory keyless entry worked though. So I started to do some digging and found that the car was also arming itself as soon as you would remove the key from the ignition...something similar to passive arming. I checked the DIC on the radio and the alarm was set to RKE, weird.

So now the car starts with the remote starter and will start with the key, but the door lock switches don't work and the car is arming the factory alarm 60 seconds after you turn the ignition to off. Also as you drive down the road, the doors will unlock themselves at random...the customer nicknamed the car Christine.

I got one of the updater modules and updated the CANSL2 to version 12.0. The door locks work with the remote start and the starting issue is fixed. I thought I may have thrown a code into the BCM and that was what was causing all my problems. So I took it into the dealer and they hooked up a tech2 to it and found 19 codes in the BCM and the driver's door lock switch was shorted out. Not sure how it got shorted out since I had been controlling the door locks with the module. I got the new lock switch installed today and everything works like it should. I am only out $52 for the lock switch and for the time the dealer looked at the car...oh and I have a bald spot on the top of my head from scratching it for the last two weeks.

In the past two years, I have installed over 50 remote starters on various types of vehicles and I will have to say, this is the one that gave me the most problems. I am just glad I am done with it and my customer is happy. The two other vehicles I did for him have had no issues and he loves the Scytek remote starters I installed.

Go to this siteand select vehicle wiring diagrams and then Chevrolet then 2004-2006 Malibu. I use this site quite a bit just to verify what my two other diagram programs are telling me. I'd give you a page from one of them, but they won't let me copy and paste anything.

Thats the one I always use too. Guess that brings me to another question, the ignition delay timer confuses me, how is this any different that just hooking up the remote start ignition directly to the cars ignition and not using a relay? Where does the red wire go?

I didn't hook up the ignition delay timer. Not sure what good it would do, you are only delaying the power going to the ignition wire by however long it takes the coil on the relay to energize.

Yes, connect it to the out when running wire.

Not really sure why you need to do it, but if I had to guess, I would say that it is to mimic what the vehicle's system does while it is being started.

Well i "tried" my install today, no luck. Hooked everything up and tried to program the cansl2 and when I would turn the key over, the red light would never blink, just stay red. I tried a few times and nothing. Tried to remote start and the car would start up a few times and die, guess cause the module not working. But 90 % of the time, it would not even engage the starter. Does this all have to do with the cansl2, do I have a bad module? It's version 1.6. I have checked all my connections, all looks good. Accessory drop relay is doing its job and the relay that goes on the RED / white wire for whatever reason is doing what its supposed to. Please let me know if anyone has any ideas. Hoping its just my module. The car is an 05

You need firmware version 12.0 or higher for it to work. If you bought it from a local shop, you could take it back to them and ask them to flash it for you.

It was amazing how well everything worked after I got the correct firmware for the CANSL2 I used on the 04 Malibu I did...well that and getting the door lock switch fixed.
