Hello! I have a question regarding a '98 Honda Civic (not sure of exact model but its a 4cyl sedan).

Apparently one of my friends replaced his factory stereo with an aftermarket headunit, and in doing so he no longer has his factory keyless entry. He doesn't have a problem with the keyless entry being gone (he'll prob get an alarm sooner or later), but part of the problem is that the dome light no longer works.

Is there any easy way to wire the dome light up directly so it works like a typical dome light? I looked at the wiring info and apparently the switch wiring is available in the kick panel, but where can we grab the wire going to the dome light? Is it on a harness near the stereo somewhere? (I haven't looked at it yet). I'm assuming that if I could find that wire, I'd just run a jumper to the switch circuit to turn the light on and off with the switches.

I'm pretty good with electronics so technically I could use a DMM to figure it out if there's a seperate plug for the keyless entry portion, but even looking at some of the aftermarket harnesses to fix this problem, it looks like they just provide power to the old radio - I dont see any other plugs that connect it to the door locks, dome light, etc. Is it wireless to a body control module or something?

All he wants is for the dome lights to work again, and rather not have the old stereo stuffed in the dash.

TIA!

Jeff

The dome wire "should" run up the A pillar.

It's green with something usually GREEN/ red, switch side, WHITE/ blue fused power supply, i would firstly check under hood fusebox, look for "backup" fuse or dome.

The dome light goes through the OEM radio, The door switches go into the radio and the leave the radio and goto the dome light.  When you remove the radio you break the connection so the dome lights stop working.  You just need to jump the door switch wire to the dome light wire to complete the circuit.  The wires are GREEN/ black and GREEN/ red and are located in the green plug.

The door pins don't stop working if you pull the factory radio....

You'll loose the security and factory keyless, but NOT the door pins (dome light)

flobee4 is right in this case. I'm surprised nobody else knows about this on the 96-98 Civic. There is a green plug that plugs into the radio. Unplugging it loses the domelight and keyless functions. Metra makes a harness called the 70-1720T which allows you to keep the OEM radio powered up and plugged in behind the center console/cup holder area. Its a tight fit, but it does fit and it won't be visible.

What I noticed....
the Civic DX....nothing special required.
LX - just jump the 2 wires to get the domelight to work.
EX - usually had keyless, use the 70-1720T.

Hey Worm, isn't that harness, with that plug, there as well, on the vehicles without factory security.....? And it's plugged into NOTHING, and the dome light/door pins work fine. posted_image

every 96-98 civic i've done is like that. even without factory keyless, you remove the factory radio and you lose the domelight with the door trigger if you don't jump those two wires. or you can use this harness:
