I am brand new to this forum, so I would first like to thank those responsible for creating a great forum!!!  :D

I am considering purchasing a Commando alarm (https://www.commandocaralarms.com) to replace the factory alarm in my wife's 1994 Grand Cherokee.  I am posting in hopes that anyone with experience with this brand will give their opinions on quality and ease of installation.

The vehicle it is going into will be used basically as a "soccer mom" vehicle.

Thank you,

Glenn

I am very familiar with their older models that they have only recently replaced with newer ones. The FM 5000 was a great starter/Alarm combo with great range and really easy to install. It has recently been replaced with the FM-5005. I actually just sent a new FM-5000 back to them since I really didint think I would be able to sell it since they had come out with new models that had 2 transmitters (1 2way and 1 reg) so they might have one if you are interested. The FM 5005 has the same transmitter but a new brain and the install manual is not very good. But with this website as a resource like you said will be able to make the install easier. For the price you really cant beat the new FM-5005.

Now you may be thinking that you only want an alarm, but installing a starter/slarm combo only requires hooking up 2 more wires than if you were to get just an alarm. The two wires will add about 15 minutes to your install time, and since this sounds like your first install it may take 4 to 6 hours.

And you also may be thinking that you dont need a 2 way unit, but trust me once you have a 2 way unit you will have a hard timne putting up with anything less.

However, if you are set on just an alarm, the 520-S will be just fine for your purpose.

You can email me if you have any more questions.

Thanks jrilla!

I really don't need the 2way.  To be honest, all my wife will use is the remote entry part of anything I install so the extras would be wasted.  I'll probably go with the 520-S...but then again their starter combo really is not much more...hmmm posted_image

It sounds like you really dont need an alarm. I would suggest just going with a starter. This way you dont have to mess with the alarm which will likely end up just being annoying. If you just get a starter, then you will have the keyless entry, and you only have to use the start features when you choose.

Email me if you have any specific questions about the units.
