I have a 2003 Nissan Maxima bought used and the key fob is checkered black and silver and says Polar (Polarstart?).  I can't make out the numbers on the back.  It has 5 buttons and the trunk open, door lock and unlock buttons work.  The button on the right which looks like a stop sign doesn't do anything that I can tell, and the car starter button in the middle (looks like a snowflake) worked last Spring but won't start the car now.  When I try to start the car by pressing the middle button, the lights flash bliiiiiink blink-blink, on one fob but the other fob does nothing.  I have had the batteries checked in both.  It must be locked out but frankly I can't make any sense of the instructions on the other postings.  Can someone explain it to me in ludite English?  Even better, tell me where I can get service, or info from a dealer, etc.  It's getting cold here.

your car is in valet mode,

Try press unlock and stop button simultaneously for 3 seconds. parklights should flash 2 times

now try remote start the car

That's exactly it.  I don't know if there is anything wrong with it.  It started the car a few months ago but now it will only lock and unlock the doors and open the trunk.  Do you know how to program it or where I can go for help?

Thanks so much for putting up the picture and the other info.  I scrolled down and someone has posted some advice I think I can understand.  I can't wait til my car gets back so I can try it.

Thanks for the advice but.....
it didn't work.  I tried pressing the unlock and stop button for at least 3 seconds with the car off and on and when I tried the middle start button all that happened was that the lights blinked long short short.  Any other ideas?  If I knew who installed it (likely in Central Alberta) I would take it in but I can't even find anyone who will admit to having sold them.

Read the last post, my mistake it should be unlock & start buttons together, press them for 3 sec, the car should respond with 2 flashes.

Then you press start button (middle one) for 1 sec.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Moonliter.  It worked on one of the fobs.  I tried the same thing on the second fob and it didn't work, and the lights didn't even flash when I tried start after the fix.  It will still lock and unlock the doors and open the trunk, so I do know the battery wasn't put in backwards by the child in the Source store.  I'm really happy to have one working thanks to you, but it's become a bit of an obsession.  Any other ideas?  Perhaps I should do a little autopsy and try and make the innards of the non-functioning one look like the working one.  We'll see how brave I get.

The locks are working, that means the battery is good. Most likely the start button had worn out. In this case, it is the membrance which is made of some sort of conductive meterial which touches the printed circuit. You can take it apart and clean it but i doubt it will work.

I took it apart, cleaned it with a Qtip, and believe it or not it came back to life.  They both work now!  Thanks so much.
