had to change the steering col in a 1994 firebird. now the security system will not let me start the car. have tried straight wiring, with no luck. used steering col did not come with keys. we are at our wits end with this car. anyone know how to remedy this or bypass? please email with details. dealer had no clue either.

You have a problem here. You have the VATS system from the 1994 Firebird, but the key tumbler from the changed steering column. From my experiences the steering column key tumbler has to match the VATS system on the car. If the two does not match, then the car will not start. You will have to do a transplant of key tumblers from the old steerinf column to the new one with all the wires as well. The resistor pellet is built into the steering column key tumbler and it send the signal to the VATS system under the driver dash. So if you change the pellet resistor value, the VATS system will not disengage.

In '94 the resistor pellet is still in the key. Move the lock cylinder from your old column or have the new key pattern cut on a blank the the resistor that matches your old key. In other words, the key cut, resistor and security module all need to match for the car to start and run. Good luck.
