93 buick regal remote starter problem

Hey whats up guys I just installed a audiovox remote starter in my friends 93 buick regal 3.8l motor,its jsut your standard pro5690 unit. Now everything works like it idels remote starts and drives on the street but at high speeds on the highway the car sounds like its skippin and sputterings.Now i taped into the white coil pack wire to get my tach signal and then zip tied it to the spark plug wires and the car didnt even want to run. So i took it off and it ran much better on the street. So i let my friend drive it home and then he called me saying at high speeds 50mph+ the car sounds like it skippin and sputtering im confused i took the tach wire off and it still does it.So if you have any ideal please feel free i need some luck now lol. it doesnt require key sense or accessory 2. i put the tach wire on the white wire and the tach learned.... do u think i burnt out a coil?? the remote starter works if u can aim me at boosted2ggst thanks if not ill type here

but yes all the other wires are hooked up

That sounds like a symptom of the car's coil pack going bad. The older 3.8s especially did that a lot......I had to replace mine on my '90 Trofeo.

It's most likely a coincidence, and not your fault. Hopefully if you search around the internet about this problem, your friend will believe you.

I think a replacement coil pack is like a couple hundred bucks at the dealer, and on the 3.8, it should be right up top and very easy to replace. You could also get a used one from a junkyard.

i found them at autozone for like 25$ a piece lol sucks but i mean do u think my install caused it. i eman the car ran ok... i found out today the powersteeting pump exploded and fluid got all over the place and he had the car steam cleaned..

i mean the car idels perfect and everything and drive normally, if the coil was bad wouldnt the car stutter at idel and driving

Ok, your additional information helps a lot.

First, no, I doubt it's your fault. You got tach at the right place.

I suppose it's possible that the high voltage from the spark plug wires could "jump" through the insulation and onto the tach wire.......I'm not really sure if that could be possible or not.

It's also a good idea to check the entire rest of your tach wire, particularly where you ran it through the firewall......make sure it didn't get pinched or chafed, and shorted to body ground. I'm not saying you did that, just that you should double-check.

But, what you said about the exploding power steering pump and the subsequent steam cleaning..........

I had a '91 Corsica for a little while (to resell), and it backfired and ran poorly ONLY when it was damp or rainy out.....on a nice hot, dry day, it ran fine.

I've heard that when those coil packs go bad, they allow moisture to enter, and that's part of the problem.

Probably, during the steam cleaning, the coil pack(s) got wet inside. It could take them a long time to completely dry, depending on your climate.

Even if they do eventually dry out and the car runs fine, it'll only happen again when it rains out or he drives through a puddle.

Whether or not your friend will believe you, and who will have to pay for the repair, I don't know what to say about that. But if you could do a little Internet research and show him that it's a common problem, that would probably help. Since the labor is very easy, maybe you could offer to do the work for free if he buys the parts.

P.S. I love to mess around with my own cars, but I'm not a professional mechanic.

I'm willing to bet it's the coil pack(s) on this car, but you should be sure you have the problem diagnosed correctly before you spend money on parts.
