I installed a compustar cm4200 remote start and a 556U transponder in my wife's 02 galant. Sometimes it remote starts and sometimes it does not, but I can't pinpoint any certain reason why. Any suggestions?

You can unplug the 556u then put the key in the ignition but don't turn it, try remote start the car. If it starts everytime then you have a transponder issue otherwise it is something else.

I tried that and it started with the 556U unplugged, but then I plugged it back in and tried to remote start it and it started right up. 2 hours ago I tried to remote start it and it just kept cranking and the green key light came on the dash. I don't get why sometimes it starts and sometimes it does not.

1st, You should check the key inside 556u is firmly seated, make sure the ign key is wrapped inside the coil. 2nd, you can adjust the ring, if possible place it in front of the factory receiver ring as shown in the installation sheet.

I checked the key positioning twice and it appears to be fine. As for the transponder ring, I could not get the aftermarket one to fit on this particular ignition switch, so I followed the included diagram and tapped into the factory transponder ring, cutting the one wire and running it through the module and simply tapping into the other wire. I don't know what else I can do to try to trouble shoot this stupid thing.

I had an issue today with a 556u, in a Honda. It would allow RS to crank but not catch. I guess my boss had reprogrammed the crank time to 1.2 sec and he thought that was the problem. She evidentially had a transponder in her key. I saw the flashing green key symbol and when it was trying to start, it was flashing. I knew from diagnosis that that was preventing vehicle from starting.
I took apart the shroud from steering column. I accessed the transponder receiver and took the two screws out holding it in place, I unplugged the green transponder plugs then I looped the wire around and behind. After this I taped the ring in place. I plugged everything back in and tried starter. It cranked and caught. I then reprogrammed her RS with the bitwriter to crank for 0.8 sec and that seemed to fix it.
These bypasses are funny. Littlest movement from vibration and it goes out of range, similar to pellets used for Ford bypasses I used to install back in 2000. I hated putting those in, I don't mind the newer ones that are hardwired into the rx and tx side of the transponder plug.
------------- The wire I'm test'n isn't doin' what it's supposed to be doin'... I am so glad I printed that tech sheet, with the wrong info.
Do it right the first time... or I might have to fix it for ya
