Own a '99 Chrysler 300M and I have been shopping around for a remote start for Christmas. Got the bad news the chip in my key is required to be present for the car to start, can't just cut a copy of my key. Have to get the new key programmed.
Chrysler wants to hit me for $50 JUSt for the key and one hour's labor to program it at $100/hr.
I don't have 2 keys for my car for the remote start install guy to program the key. He said he'd do it for $30 but I have to have 2 keys which I don't. Bought the car used years ago and it only came with one key.
Called a locksmith who said he could do it with one key for $90 total, which is a little better. I think he has all the codes programmed in a computer already so he doesn't need 2 keys, something like that.
Question is, is there any way of getting around the whole bypass thing to install a remote start in my car? Is there any crafty way to get myself a copy of my key for any cheaper than $90?? Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd really like a way to maybe score an extra key just a little cheaper than $90. That would be great.

Like you've already found, a locksmith can be cheaper than the dealer.
There is another way.
1. Make as many non-transponder copies of your key as you want.
2. Get an ordinary, key-in-the-box style bypass module.....DEI's 556U, Audiovox AS-TCBM, Trilogix TBK-III, anything like that.
3. Bury your existing key in the module. Install module in the car. Wire the bypass module so it comes on EVERY time the car's ignition is turned on, remote start or not.
4. You can now start the car with the plain keys.
Two downsides......
A. The car is now easier to steal.
B. You have to do careful work. If the installation of your bypass ever should go bad, you'll be stranded.
