Hello,
I am writing this post on behalf of my older brother. He is looking to purchase a home theater system. Both he and I know little to nothing about home theater audio so I thought I would ask for some advice here since I know some of you have knowledge about home theater.
Basically, he is looking to spend $400-$700 on the system. He's not one to build a custom enclosure or anything so he's probably just interested in a, more or less, pre-fab setup. Also, he wanted me to mention that he will be using blu-ray with this system (not sure what that matters to be honest). He lives in a condo so the room that the system will be going into is relatively small.
So, any recommendations on a home theater system that's good for his constraints would be appreciated.

You would be looking at a small box system like a Pioneer or even a Logitec. You won't get much for a small budget like that. Here's the Pioneer Systemand it's right in the ball park of what you want to spend, but don't expect too much from this as they are still small speakers with limited capabilities ------------- Jeff

This is exactly what I told him. I don't think has a very good understanding of how much high-end audio components can go for.
Btw, is there any chance that you meant to link to this system? The one you linked to is only $199.

If he can spend a little bit more SVS has a very good 5.1 system that is had to beat. It is $999 and only a internet company, how ever they have a outstanding support and return system if your not happy. https://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm

Thanks for the link. I know this is over what he was looking to spend, but this set seems to be far superior to the other pioneer stuff so I'll mention it to him. If he were to get this SVS set, would he still need to get an amplifier as well?

Yea you will still need to get a reciver, that is where you can save some money unless you want HDMI type stuff. The pawn shops will some times have some real good deals on them. The biggest thing you pay for with recivers is the bells and whisles(SP) Price for price they will all sound the same maybe a slight diference. One thing hold true 100X5 numbers really don't mean that it might of put that much power to one channel. The SVS speakers are very well put together worth every penny and would cost more at retail stores but they are only internet, so you save a lot of money just on that alone. The thing I really like is that if your looking at one of there top end subs and you ask them if it will work in your room they will flat out tell you that the cheaper one will work out better.

I know very little about receivers. Say, for example, that my brother decided to go with the SVS setup. What would be a good receiver to use with that system?
My brother is going to be using this with a PS3/Blu-ray and I think, but am not sure, that impacts what kind of receiver he needs to get.

This is the one I am on a lot as Deerhunter As for the receiver with the PS3 not sure what it uses for the connections so just get a receiver that has the same type of connectors. You don't have to spend a lot on the receiver it will not have a lot of effect on how the speakers sound. The biggest difference on the sound is the speakers.
