So I am a novice to building my first solar panel. I would like to know what type of Diode I should use ? Also do I need a separate Diode for the positive and negative leads ? I have heard that the Schottky is the best to use. Since I need just over three amps would I use a three amp or could I also use a four or five amp Diode. I will have at first just one twelve volt deep cycle battery but will add more down the road.

Diode just needs to be on one side.   It is used to prevent battery discharge back through the pannel when no light is avalible.   The diode must be rated higher than the maximum power draw.  Any diode will work, some better than others.
