alright so im working on a 2004 ls, dont recall if its a v6 or v8 although im sure its not relevant. i guess a while back the battery exploded and the fuse box (in the trunk by the battery) got eaten up a bit but all the wires and contacts are perfectly in tact and have been professionally cleaned. however heres the problem that i'm facing. all 4 of the switched power something relays (they're abbreviated on the diagram, i cant remember how though, ssps or something) are staying energized all the time. i tested the terminals and the 85 gets a constant 12v which makes sense because they appear to be ground triggered. i checked resistance to ground at the 86 terminal and got 6.1 MOhms on all 4 relays.

im wondering if thats a normal reading? and what else do you think could be going on here? im wondering if something shorted and damaged the ecm(s) in the vehicle when the batt exploded? what do you guys think?

idea just popped into my head. how about i just rewire the relays to turn on with the ignition? anybody know enough about the electrical system in this car to know if this will allow the vehicle to function properly? as it is right now the vehicle runs just fine but the battery drains quickly. the customer just wants a simple safe fix. as far as i can see this should work fine but before i do it i would like some input from you guys. can anyone think of why this might not be a good idea?

just for you guys to know, i realized these relays eventually go to sleep with the vehicle.

To me it sounds as if the relay tests are ok ASSUMING the 85 +12V is with IGN or whatever on, and the 6MR to ground is with Ign off - measured with both polarities (and diode tester?).

My question is what caused the batery to explode?
You mentioned trunk so is that a second battery or the only battery? If the only battery, is that its standard setup?
I assume it is an AGM battery that suffered thermal runaway?
If so, was it being overcharged, or had a cell(s) collapsed?

If someone else is familiar with this setup, please take over.... I am only acting as fallback, and may have more questions later.

If that's the same as the recent (98-07) S type Jag, it's all sleeper circuits, that's the main battery, all the lights are neg. switched, controlled from the multifunction module. I would strongly advise one or both of two things here:
1)Old school, draw test on the battery and remove one fuse at a time.
2)Diagnostic equipment.

-------------
Amateurs assume, don't test and have problems; pros test first. I am not a free install service.
Read the installation manual, do a search here or online for your vehicle wiring before posting.

So just an update, i ended up finding a GPS tracking module tucked under the dash, the kind dealerships use on vehicles they sell to people with bad credit. it was tapped into some random wire and it was keeping the system awake. removed it and the problem went away.

Thanks for closing!

Interesting heads-up for car buyers too.
