Hey all,

I am interested im how to install a refridgerator into a 12v system. I want to install a small unit. My concern is that the refridgerator will continue to draw power from the battery while the car is off...obviously bad. but if the fridge dosen't get power while the vehicle's off then no refridgeration... how do poeple do it in RV's? also does anybody know of a 12v fridge, or would I have to do the typical inverter solution? thanks!

They sell small refrigerators for cars, some just big enough for a 6-pack of cans and others a little bit bigger. Some even have cup holders on top of it that keep your drink cold or warm. What would you be refrigerating, and how long? These mobile refrigerators already have inverters on them and you just use the given cigarette adaptor, or you can hardwire it to your car. Just put a lighted switch on the power supply so you can leave it on while the car is off for a short period of time.

are you getting ready for the summer months? What size car do you have and what size refrigerator do you plan on having and where do you plan on putting it?   I myself thought of those small 6-pack portable ones but somehow did not get to it. Good idea.

Can't you find those things at like walmart, kmart or dicks sporting goods? I thought I had seen them at some department store before. Maybe jcwhitney.com as well.

some links:

https://www.norcold.com/acdc_main.cfm , https://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-refrigerators/car-refrigerator.htm , https://www.cetsolar.com/dcsnackmaster.htm , https://www.cetsolar.com/dcappliances.htm

The last three links have them for like $100.00 or a little more.

a friend of mine wants me to help him install a fridge in his car. I have a few questions and i am sure that someone out there will be able to help.

1)does anybody know of a 12v fridge, or would I have to use the typical inverter solution?

2)i imagine the fridge would shut off when the vehicle is off, is there a way to get around this without draining the battery?

thanks!

1. Yes there are 12 volt refridgerators.
2. Unless you wire it to an acc/ign wire then yes it will kill the battery. If you wire to one of these though then it will loose power when the car's key is not on.

You could also use those special boxes that you place artificial ice in, where you can keep something very cold for all day. Not as good as a refrigerator, but then you get to keep things cold for a long time with no power. I use mine in the summer months on my 201 mile trips.
