just wondering what everyone thought about this subject. when working on a security system or audio would you rather work on a pre 1996 or a newer car, and why.

Personally for me it doesn't matter if the vehicle's 5 years old or 5 days old as long as it's never been hacked into by another installer. Most newer systems have alot of stuff that you have to bypass or integrate into, but that's part of the industry and you get used to it.

Old definitly... Not as much byapssing and such... definitly easyer to sell... and no databus gremlins... But the new stuff seems to be getting easier all he time.... Sometimes the old stuff really suck to dismantel.. and the smell.... Most people are real pigs... heh

Welcome back Jeff. Also doesn't matter to me as to how old the car is, unless it is german or a miata( the dash disingrates when you touch the ones that are dry rotted).

Not really picky when it comes to these options. Some vehicles have the wires located in better spots than trucks under the dash . Take for instance the new 2004/2005 Civic's have a plethora of room under the dash in comparison to a 1997-2002 Ford F150 and the wires are alot easier to access knowing that they pass right in front of you by the steering column.

like Jeff said age is no matter as long as a BS installer did not lay his hands on there before.

Dude we just got done a strech in Regina here that was -56 with the windchill. The question of the day was "How come my command start didnt work" I would ask it the car was plugged in they said "No, thats why I got a command start" I reply "did you use the overnight timer" That is generall followed by a long silence or them trying to tell me that they dont have one. Then I say read your manual and hang up. Repeat as nessasary

I agree with everyone else, just the older ones seem to be a little dirtier.

I also appreciate when the owner has taken time to clean their vehicles out before bringing them to the shop versus bringing their vehicle to the shop with the trunk full of clothes and back seat piled up with clothes and homework and whatever else, wanting to have a couple amps installed and subwoofers and enclosure in the trunk, oh the fun of cleaning out someone else's car!! :(

I don't do installs proffessionally but I do alot of this stuff for other people as well as myself.  I can say that I agree that when someone else has worked on the vehicle before it makes it more difficult.  I don't mind newer cars, there are just more things to bypass and work on but that, to me, is part of the fun of the job.  Domestic VS. Import doesn't make a big difference to me.  My moms toyota is very simple, it has an alarm system on it but putting a remote start on it was actually pretty simple.  I own a chevy and I found that that is pretty simple to work on as well.  So, new or old, import or domestic, they're all fun to me.
