I bought my Crown Vic in Novemeber so I didnt have a chance to do any sort of exterior work on it. But its supposed to be warming up over the next week or so and I wanna get the car lookin good for the summer.

My first order of business is to repaint the vinyl top. For some reason a previous owner painted over the factory red top with black paint. The black has begun to fade away so the red is showing through in a bunch of spots. It looks terrible. What kind of paint would i use to repaint this?? Im sure most of you have seen the vinyl tops on teh 80s caddys, vics, lincolns etc and know what im talking about. I would need something that can stand up to rain, washings and the sun. It doesnt have to be professional quality stuff. Im going to do it myself and anything will make look better then it does now. If anyone can give me a idea of what to get and where to look for it, it would be much appreciated.

Hmm.. i would probably take all the the black paint off and get it down to the bare vinyl, then maybe black shoe dye? Dying the vinyl instead of painting it should last for much longer than paint.

Otherwise, try getting just regular spray paint that is used to trim.

If i think of anything else, I'll let you know.

NAPA auto parts sells a vinyl dye in a spray can that works great. The hard part probably will be getting all of the old spray off.

I bought a can of black vinyl spray paint at pep boys today. Do you think i will need to get the old paint off before I use the new paint or can I just paint over the old stuff??

I would try to get all of the old paint off first. If you don't the new dye won't stick and will peel off like the paint did. I don't know what will remove the old paint from the vinyl though.
