How did the numbers 12,30,86,87 on the terminals come about.

It's a DIN (Deutsche Industrie Normen) standard, although I can't tell you how they came to use those particular numbers for an SPDT relay (30, 85, 86, 87, 87a) or any of the others for that matter ;) If you find some history on it, please let us know.

What I know is it started in Germany with the Bosch relays.
