700r4"s are very commonly used in most rear wheel drive 8 cylinders.  as i've had my share and have one now in my z28. i believe they are junk as most other people do in my bussness. always having to rebuild them. thats why i have the 350 turbo on the shell waiting untill i finish the 383 block thats going in.

but i believe your problem may not be in the trannie. more like rear end or u joint. but of course from the info you have posted i can't tell much.

give exact time it does it. start from stop. as you drive, give some drivablity conditions and i will see if i can help.

as far as I  know trannies dont make knocking sounds, a possible whine but no knock. what makes you think its the trans? is it shifting slow or harder than usual? little info. I did have a friend that was having problems with the ball bearings on his front end. hope that helps

Found Out what my knocking sound was, front u-joint, fixed it but I still have a problem with hard shifting from first to 2nd gear when I hammer on it, and when I say hard shift I mean that it woould toss a salad when it shifhts, any ideas?

thankx for the update on the fix.

for the new problem well sounds like the bands are starting to slip. but if it is only doing it in that order. you could try a lucas trannie fluid.

if i was you i would check the kick down cable for proper operation, like not being stuck or restricted by a bend in the cable. check for any rough spots.
