I have a digital compase that orininally is powered by a 1.5 volt battery, can I use a resistor to lower the voltage from12 volts to 1.5 volts so I can hard wire the compass into my vehicle?

for to start  it 's necessary that you know the consumption of your apareil (amperage) then all is simple the formula is the voltage (13.8) divided by amperage . the result give you the value of the resistance in ohm.

a car varies between 12.8-14.4 (14.4 while charging and constant power will probally be 12.8 when car is off). Other then that its simply ohms law oh ya you need to know the amps it draws but it safe to assume its the same as the battery and it should have it written there.
