I just bought a 1998 mitsubishi eclipse and have already gotten into enough trouble for a lead foot so i am not looking for speed but the car itsself has a good look to it so thats why i got it. the guy i bought it from has a set of really good cam gears that he paid over 300$s for new still in the box. he said i should put them on when i change the timing belt but i wasn't sure how often stock cam gears go bad because i am not looking for the performance upgrade i would rather sell them but was wondering the pro's and con's to switching out cam gears.

Adjustable cam gears will only add horsepower to your vehicle and OEM cam gears don't normally wear out ( unless it's a timing chain ). The canvas/rubber belts that are OEM will not wear out the cam gears so chances are you won't need to replace the gears unless you want to retard or advance your timming for added horsepower or other tweaks done to the vehicle.

Pros: Being able to tune your valve timing. This requires a few major tools to do properly. Like one would be a dyno.
Cons: Possability of hurting your valves and losing horse power due to blind tuning.
