The topic might sound rude but it isn't at all. I have to drive home now and there is this girl at my office who, on many days, wants me to give her a ride home as she lives in the same direction. Since I am doing a favour, I drive my route and let her off near a train station which is close to her home. All this sound alright. Recently she has been asking me to drop her off at a point between two highways, where there is a red-light and she can walk about a hundred feet to another highway where there is a bus stop that she can wait at for her bus. At times I stop at this signal light (of course when the light is red) and she asks me if it is ok for her to get off the car even when I have two lanes of cars to my right and one lane of cars to my left, all stopped at the light. Nearby cars' passengers look at me when the door of my car opens. This is almost like a highway as it is a junction between a few highways. My question is am I liable to get a ticket for letting someone off this way? Or is this ok? I am thinking of telling her to not do this again or just refuse to drop her anymore. Sorry about the lengthy explanation but I figured if I give details it will make the response that much easier.
Any advice is appreciated.

Ah man, I am on the edge of my seat thinking the story is about to take a turn with "so then she says, if you don't take me all the way home buster, I am going to start farting in your car, and that is when I let her out on the highway and never gave her a ride again" Well, not exactly that scenario, but I was thinking something crazy was going to happen. Back to your question, you should consult your DMV guidebook for your state to see what is legal and illegal as far as where someone exit your car. I would let her out there, if there was at a red light and she was in no immediate danger. Then again, depending on how good looking she is, I may take her home everyday. Her home, not mine. Why dosent she chip in a few bucks and you take her all the way home,or she could chip in some brains for the ride ------------- RTFM

That would be great if she offered to chip in some bucks (which she did the first 4 or 5 times, but then just conveniently forgot about it). I just don't want to be fined for no fault of mine. As pointed out earlier,I guess I got to call two states' dmvs as /I travel through 2 states to go home(and work).

It takes me about 40 minutes in the morning thanks to my radar detector (with minimal traffic and selective routes) but in the evenigns and Thursdays and especially Fridays (I don't understand how this traffic increases as the week progresses) it takes me 2 hours or more easily - no pun intended.

Still, the idea of traveling from one state to another to go to work everyday just pops my top.

Thats not the only problem. I have to pay taxes for two states as well. Don't you consider yourself lucky?

I would be uncomfortable letting someone, especially a girl, out of the car when there is idling traffic beside and behind me. Whether or not a cop would find it to be a violation is secondary, in my opinion. The fact is that there is inherent danger in doing this whether it's legal or not. At the least, there could be jaywalking and seatbelt violations, not to mention failure to secure a load. ;)

She just says "Oh, my bus is just a block away, I can reach home a lot quicker if I take the bus; is it ok to get off here?" meanwhile unlocking the door and opening it already ajar, leaving me not much of a choice. Even though I did not mention being uncomfortable leaving a girl on the highway, I figured such a feeling was implicit. In any case, I refused the favour, saving all kinds of troubles (and feelings). I have found a polite way to say no without hurting anyone's feelings.
