does anyone have an explanation for motor overheating unless air conditioner on? My ac runs great blows very cold air but if I turn it off the car quickly overheats.

Some cars have 2 fans 1 is the cooling fan that pulls air through the radiator to cool the engine. The other fan runs when the AC is on, this fan is to pull air through the AC unit but it also pulls air through the radiator. Chances are the main cooling fan is not working.

Chris,

That car has TWO coolant temp sensors.  One drives the PCM and the other drives the guage.

The CTS for the PCM needs replaced, since your electric fan is not coming on during normal operation.

When the AC is on, the PCM commands coolant fan on, so you aren't overheating because the fan is running.

I'll bet the car will run better after you replace that ECTS.
