i am trying to up the voltage of my headlights to try and make them a little brighter. is this possible by just running a relay with the power source wire of the lights. it is on a honda civic 87

you can do it....

and need the wiring setup for the relay also... thanks for all the help guys.

Where are you planning to get the extra voltage from? Are you not going to get tired of changing bulbs monthly?
The title says amperage up, your question was voltage up, the amperage up will be easy. Which do you want?
You could possibly raise the voltage a slight amount by using thicker cable directly from the battery, through the relay. The relay would be wired as follows:
Pin 30 - fused wire directly from battery
pin 87 - output to head light (should use two relays for best results)
pin 85 - head light orignial power lead
pin 86 - ground
The goal here is to keep the wire as short as possible to eliminate voltage drop.
There are two ways to increase amperage:
1. Use a bulb with a lower internal resistance (may require rewiring entire system to handle the increased current load)
2. Raise the system voltage. This may be near impossible, as it wouldn't be practical. However, if you could get your headlights to run at 16vdc your current will increase.
