Subject: triggering back up camera off of 11.5 v

im installing BOYO VTP-100 which is a wireless backup camera reciever and transmitter, along with a backup camera. On the trailers that im installing them on, i only get 11.5 to 11.7 volts. And thats not enough to trigger the transmitter and the camera. They both need full 12 volts.

So my ques is, is there a relay or something i can wire in to help get it to 12volts or help trigger it?

Thanks

Have you tried the camera yet.  I find it hard to believe that 11.5 is not enough to trigger it.

Wire a relay as follows.  86 to the 11.5 volt trigger wire.  85 needs to be grounded.  30 needs to go to the battery, via a 12 Ga. wire with a 5 amp fuse as close to the battery as you can get it.  87 will now feed 12.5 to 13.8 to your camera.

Yes is did. I found it hard to believe also. Been doing this for 5yrs full time and never ran into a prob lik this.

Heres the thing. There are 7 trailers im doing. 3 race car 40ft trailers and 4 18wheeler oversized 65ft trailers. So running a wire to the battery or another 12+volt source is not fesable. Thats the reason i went with wireless camera system to cut down on connections to the cab of the vehicles pulling them.

Also there are two things needing to be hooked up. The VTP-100 Transmitter and the camera. So the voltage isnt enough.

So is there any other way to hook it up?

Have you checked the trailer connector to see if there is any corrosion on the reverse light wire?  You could use the relay setup at the vehicle side of the trailer plug.   You may need a 10 amp fuse since it will be powering the reverse lights on the trailer also.

See it would be great if the trailers had reverse lights. But they dont. Dont know y but they dont. Yes i have checked for corrosion faulty wiring. But the lights work just fine. Its just that for my application the trailer isnt getting 12+v from the truck. I called the ppl that make the trailer and they said that thier is an aux wire. That i could tag a acc or ign wire from the truck to that aux wire in the harness going to the trailer and use that.

But i didnt know if there was an easier way to up the voltage sense its only missing maybe a volt.

Ive read about the Reed Relay but the max voltage on that is 8v. So that wouldnt work for me.

How were u saying to wire in the relay on the vehicle side?

If there is no backup light on the trailer, how are you triggering the camera?

Daytime running lights. They have to turn the lights on. Thats the only way to do it.

You will have to locate that wire in the trailer harness. On the vehicle side of that harness, you will need to cut that wire far enough back so you can make your connections. Connect the vehicle side of that wire to terminal 86. Ground terminal 85. The other end of the wire you cut(the end that goes to the back of the trailer plug) connects to terminal 87. Depending on how many lights there are on the trailers, you may have to step up to a 10 Ga. wire and a 15 amp fuse. The wire that runs to the battery connects to terminal 30. This will now give you a direct from the battery not through the light switch highest voltage possible for your camera.

You need to check the voltage at the trailer plug, if it is 12.5 or so, you then need to inspect the wiring on the trailer. Inspect as in see if the wire is big enough. With a lot of bulbs they will be pulling a lot of current. If the wire is too small you will have voltage drop.

really 10ga? That big?

I don't know how many lights it is going to be powering. At first I thought it was just a reverse light. I have seen some trailers on the road with 20 bulbs.

I fig it out. The wiring was a little lose on the vehicle side. I retapped it then i had 14v. Thx 4 ur help.
