A friend of mine is picking up a set of power folding mirrors for his Subaru WRX.

As of now, we are going to use two relays(one to fold them closed, and one to unfold them) and a 3 positon switch so he can manualy control them.

What we would REALLY like to do is have the mirrors fold and unfold with the ign.  Wiring a relay to kick on with the ignition and unfold the mirrors is no problem.  What I am having a brain fart is.....

1. Wire up a relay to close the mirrors when the ign is off

2. Make sure the relays don't stay energized with the car either on or off, causing the mirrors to constantly try to open and close the mirrors.(Similar to holding the power window switch up even after the window is all the way up)

Assuming the relays are wired to constant battery power you'll just need a timer ciruit to trigger when the ign is turned off and a timer circuit to trigger when the ign is turned on.  There should be a variety of already made products out there to do this, or you could build your own.

Something like this could be done to output a short pulse when the ignition is turned off. The resistor and capacitor just needs to be selected to get the time you need for folding the mirror. After it times out, the relay should remain off until the ignition is cycled again.

If you want to try it without any solid state components, you could try doing it brute force by using a large cap in series with the ignition input, and connect that to the low side of the relay. The high side of the relay would go to a 12V source. The cap in series would limit the amount of time the relay can stay on. Also put the diode across the cap to discharge it when the ignition goes high. Whether you can get away with this or not depends on how long a pulse time you need to do the folding. It'll be limited by the draw of the relay and the size of the cap.
