2000 jeep grand cherokee, power folding mirror

hi i am new here and this is my first post i needed some help i have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with power fold mirrors what i wanted to do was connect the mirrors up so when i unlock the car they come out and when locked they go in does anyone know how i can do this and what i will need in order for this to work. thanks in advance

The first thing you need to do is figure out exactly how the OEM system works.  For example you will need to know the switch polarity and if it works or won't work when the car is off.  It will also help to know if the mirror motor will continue to run for as long as you hold the button down, or if the mirror motor will shut off when the mirror is fully moved (based on either a lmit switch or current draw).

Depending on exactly how the system works will determine the appropriate interface.  The last one I did was for an R56 Mini Cooper and I built a microcontroller based interface circuit to fold the mirrors.

the one thing i know is that the mirrors dont fold in and out when the cars off is there anyway to connect it using a relay or something similar

So, if the ignition is off the mirrors will neither fold nor unfold?

thats correct mate

that will make it a little more difficult.  You will need to find out exactly how the mirror and switch are wired.  Is the switch connected right to the mirror or is there a controller box in between?

First thing, pull the mirror switch to see if the power feed oviously ignition controlled is there, then cut and join with a constant 12v+ fused (5amps) wire. If this makes the mirriors work all the time, you're in with a ghost of a chance. You've then got to test the switch outputs to see what's happenning, they are all different! e.g. Toyota Supra needs a 5 wire timed relay  interrupting circuit, each side either to ground one side or other plus + one side or other depending on direction. Some Japanese Mitsubishis need a momentary pos. pulse to 1 wire, and automatically open when you turn on the ignition. I've had BMW E46 mirrirs do it automaticaly on arming the alarm, but this is down to the dealer or fiddling with the I Drive.
