I've purchased a Viper 5501 remote starter for my car and while reading the install guide, I found that this module uses something called a "flex relay".

After going through the Viper and Directed websites, i'm unable to find any info for these relays. A google search also produced no results.

If anyone can shed some light on how these relays differ from a regular spdt relay, or how and when they should be used, it would be appreciated.

A flex relay is a relay that can be used to provide either a positive or ground output.

So basically, it really doesn't differ from a regular relay. Is this right?

Thanks for the reply

Correct, but I think the flex relay is internal of their brain or modules.  Instead of 30 being connected to power or ground, that terminal is ran outside of the unit to allow you to connect it to whatever you need,

It also got me thinking when I am installing my Clifford 50.7x on my 05 Nissan Terabot (Xterra)4.0L 4WD SE . I have 3 10GA wires with "flex relay" attached to its description. It took me a week long of research about it 'til I saw a write-up in one forum, can't remember where:( the guy took them 3 wires of the Heavy Gauge, 10 pin-connector = H3/2 [RED / White] (+)(30A) Fused Ignition 2/Flex Relay Input 87, H3/6 Fused Ignition 1 Relay Input and H3/9 [RED / Black] (+)(30A) Fused Accessory/Starter Relay Input and connected it to the (+)Constant(12V) in the ignition harness. It worked for me and my module gets powered up. I finished my install 5 days back and I am thinking of buying a bypass module now (XK07 I believe it's for Infinity and Nissan) for the remote start feature of the module.

Hope this will stick. Or be useful to anybody.

Thanks for the input

I emailed Directed Tech Support this question and this is the response...

"The flex relay is called so because it is flexible. It can be programmed for a starter output, ignition output, or accessory output. It's very helpful when working on Toyotas and Nissans or older Fords."

Also, as per the install guide, you have access to terminals 87, 87a and 30, giving you many different wiring possibilities.

I hope this helps others.
