"89 jaguar xj6, when i turn ignition key off the motor continues to run. can only kill by pulling coil wire. There is an ignition relay that i suspect is falty? It is a bosch 30amp, part #0 332 014 454. Can it be bench tested? how? Does anyone know of a proper replacement?

Remove the relay from the socket, using an ohm meter check for continuity between terminals 30 and 87, if those 2 are electrically connected with the relay in your hand, it is bad.

Yes - a Jap car. The whole lot.

I thought all those XJ6s had burnt to the ground. Maybe enough did fix the starter cable long enough to survive....

It is possible that the relay is faulty (if fitted; carbies or EFI?).
As Idiot said, pull the relay and see if that stops it.

You could also try disconnecting the alternator wire/s - not the heavy +12V power cable, but the others. In particular the charge-light circuit which may be labeled D+ or L.
Some older vehicles had problems with feed-through (from alternator via regulator and the charge-light to the Ignition Coil +12V) that was enough to keep the engine running. It's fixed by inserting a diode in the charge-lamp circuit.

(I assume 1989 Jags use an alternator rather than a generator - especially since Lucas had internally regulated alternators in the late 1970s.)

The condition happens for both internal and external regulated alternators.

BTW - if the Ign Relay is not turning off, you may end up with a flattery. (But not from me LOL!)

I'd start from the beginning and check the ignition switch. Didn't it have an ignition relay in a bank on the passenger side under the glovebox back then? And yes Peter, they were alternator/neg ground from about 68, also with 4 wheel discs brakes. All these British innovations were wonderful, the execution was rubbish.
And yes here in the UK you will rarely see any pre 95. Having said that the newish XJF sedan eats up the BMWs and Audis.

Just thought of an easy test, with engine running, pull the plug if there is one off the back of the ignition switch. If that kills the engine you have an ignition switch fault, it's nowhere else.

Hello Oldspark, I had to take a break from the Jag,frustrated!
I am trying to follow your suggestion re: alternator. Having trouble IDing the charge-light circuit wire. Can't locate D+ or L on anything. I think these lines go to the coil?? Anyway I'm thankful for your attempt to help and would greatly appreciate any further assistance.

Hello HowieII. sorry for not responding sooner I had to take a break from the Jag I was going a little crazy. Nothing has changed. The relay was not the problem nor is the wire on the back of the switch.
Someone suggested that Jags had a stop solenoid. Know anything about that? What about the ECU? Could it be in play?
I would appreciate any additional info you might have.

The alternator will have its standard "heavy" +12V power wire to the battery etc. Ignore that - it is never discussed (except when people forget to connect them!).
And there shouldn't be any ground cables because it's grounded thru the engine & chassis - but some people add them for whatever reason... Ignore that wire too (if it exists) - ie, a heavy cable from alternator body to engine etc.

Unless it is a permanent magnet rotor or "stator" type alternator (no way! (surely?)), there should be at least one wire (D+) from the alternator.

a D+ wire may be one a stud with a nut or similar.
But id 2 or more wires, then a removable connector is likely - though it may have a locking tab etc to avoid falling out.

From what I can see, your alt will be either Lucas else Bosch. (Bad luck! Jag didn't go to ND until later. Hmmm - was that a German car that went to a Jap alternator rather than Bosch??)

But I can't tell what sort of connections it has.

Apparently the charge lamps is controlled by the Load Dump Module....

FYI Peter, they also used Motorola at one time.

Don't worry, probably not relevant.
