Subject: thermo fan, trigger buzzer when fuse blows
Date Posted: May 01, 2011 at 4:21 AM

I have a thermo fan on my 4x4, at times the fuse to the fan blows. I'd like to use a relay to trigger a buzzer to sound inside the car when the fuse blows. Any help with diagrams is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You won't need a relay, wire as follows and this applies to a buzzer or an LED.
Ignition to + side of buzzer or LED, - side of buzzer or LED to fan feed AFTER fuse.

thanks for the quick reply. i tried what you suggested, it did not work. i  put positive on buzzer to positive on battery, then to fan feed after fuse, with no luck. any other suggestions?

Try the same thing then remove the fuse and see what happens.
If that fails, try the fuse on the actual fan feed + wire.

i tried to put positive from buzzer to power before the fuse ( it has power all the time) and negative on buzzer after fuse with fuse removed. no luck.

Check the actual fan wiring, the "HOT" (12v+) when running should sit on ground when the fuse is removed, this should work if you place the + side of the buzzer before the fuse, the - side after then remove the fuse.
I'd also wonder who did the original wiring because why does the fan blow it's fuse?

Wire the buzzer across the fuse just as Howie suggested. Triple your money back guarantee on this one.

Have you actually checked this buzzer across the battery to see if it works? Is there a relay after the fuse? Back to my earlier suggestion about the motor wire.

Wouldn't the vehicle have to be at temp for the buzzer to work (the thermostat closed)?

How much current does your buzzer require?

thank you all for your help so far. i have had a good hard look and found the following. the live fuse goes to a relay. This is what i found, fuse goes to 30, 86 to thermostat switch, 87 to fan, 85 has two black wires one to negative on battery other to fan, the other 87 terminal (there are teo on the relay) has nothing on it.

i hope this helps you help me.

It confirms what I was thinking - when the thermostat is off the fan side of the fuse rests at open (and not at ground). If you connect the beeper as Howie and Craig suggested it should beep once the fan is called for. This is assuming the beeper doesn't require more current the fan can provide through its internal resistance.

As I said before, but now modified because of the relay, buzzer+ to 30 BEFORE the fuse, buzzer - to wire from 87 on relay.

If your fan is constantly switched on, only if the fuse fails. If you only switch on when necessary you need to run the buzzer hot wire to the switch output assuming it's positive switched. If not then you will need a relay.
If the switch is thermal, i.e. an "Otter" or temp sensing, I need to know the wiring layout.

i just finished checking the thermal switch. one wire goes to 86 on the relay, another to a probe type thing onto the top radiator hose, the third and last wire goes to a wire up under the dash to the instruments, i assume the temp. gauge.

Wire the buzzer + to 86, - to 87

When the fuse is blown or removed.
Methinks this thread is approaching the giddy limits for it's length.

If you connect the buzzer across the fuse, at the fuse holder, the buzzer will sound anytime the fan should be turning and the fuse is blown.  Both conditions must be met for buzzer to sound.
