I have a 5 post relay. I have a 12 V source. I need to interrupt a non voltage line that is normally connected. After ready every thing I could see on the Internet, I'm still not sure of the proper connections. Any help would be appreciated, probably simple for those of you, by confusing toan old guy. Thanks in advance.

If you ground terminal 85 of a relay and connect 12 volts to terminal 86 of that same relay, that will break the connection between terminals 87A and terminal 30.

Thanks, that is exactly what I needed. I now see why you have 5 gold stars. Thanks from Huntington Brach CA.

BUT!......

if you have 85 grounded and 86 powered with the car not running for days on end, you may end up with  a dead battery.

what exactly is your application of this relay?

if what i mentioned is your situation you may want to look into a latching relay.

I am using this to break a line (the low oil sensor) in a portable generator. By breaking this line, the generator thinks it's low on oil and shuts down. I power this with 8 AA cells to get 12 Volts through a remote control relay kit. After activating this remote, I can trigger it again and it's ready to go next time. Does this still reate a draw on the batteries. It's only used once a day for 3 or 4 days.

Yes, you will need a latched relay, doesn't draw any juice look at Mouser or Farnell catalogues.
Come to think of it, since the average Bosch type relay coil draws approx 1.2 amps I doubt whether your 8 cells will even throw the coil!

1.2 amps?

dei triggers for relays are usually 200ma capable......

i have 5 different brands of bosch style relays here that i just tested. all were from basically 150-200ma.

a lot of times a 9volt battery will throw a coil.

Yes I agree I've flipped Bosch coils at 7.5 volts BUT the draw is about 1.2 amps!
Unless I'm missing something I think Mr. I will agree with me.
The whole point being that 8 x 1.5 volt cells might have the voltage capabilities but certainly not the CURRENT.

The bottom line is the system I am using works for my purposes. It sounds like I may want to put a switch to shut the batteries off when not in use. As for looking in a catalog for a different relay, remember, I couldn't even figure out what terminals to use. I am going to share this project with my fellow firefighter retirees. I would like to have a led light indicating that power is on or off when I activate the battery power. Do I just put it inline with the switch? Trying not to make this to complicated, just a project, cuz I don't want to go out at night and turn off my generator when I am camping in the desert. I will send diagram if anyone is interested. Thanks again for the input.

Yes to the LED light in series. Make sure it's a 12V LED.
Send the diagram, see what we can come up with.

Since I am a junior member I can't post images. I did buy a combo LED switch at the local shop and everything seems to be working fine   Thanks for all the help and information.
