Running too high of voltage through the coil will increase the current which can cause the coil to burn up.

What is the relay for?

Are you sure the coil is burning up and not the contacts? I have rarely, if ever, seen the coil fail. The contacts are the "wear" part.

I had a 94 Civic that had a strange problem with that relay. The day after a hard rain, my car would not start. Leave it for a few hours it would start. I discovered that if I left the key on for a minute or 2 you would hear the relay click and it would start. I never took the time to troubleshoot it, I would just wait the minute before starting.

Haha. Like a "wait to start" bulb but on a gas engine. That is great.

No point replacing until you find out the problem, work back from your last post. In normal operation I've seen these coils last 20 years plus.

By the way the word is BURNT and have you
a) Blown any light bulbs?
b) Jump started your car from another vehicle recently?
Suspect alternator.
I've never even seen a burnt out coil, read what Kevin Pierson says in the previous thread.

How are you testing the coil to prove it is burnt up? As mentioned in the other thread I would be more suspect of the contacts not the coil. If it is a contact problem you could be burning them up by a fuel pump that is on its way out.

Howie, he is not talking about an ignition coil.  He is talking about the coil of the main relay.  It powers the fuel pump, and I think the ignition.

Not relevant Craig, what's causing the problem?
It appears to be ongoing.
Has the OP removed the offending item and flashed the coil contacts to see if the coil is working, I'm with KP on this one.

I have never inspected one. I do know that it is a common problem with Civics of that era.

Craig, over we here we have a guy called "Honest John" yes really!
He runs an answer section in the motoring section of a leading daily newspaper plus he has a web site listing all known problems for every vehicle sold here but no manufacturer's info, his data base includes dealers, traders and the rescue organisations, I'll take a look tomorrow.
I was also wondering if there's an equivalent in the US.
