I have a DVR from a truck and it has red & black power cables and a thinner yellow cable which the manual says is to be hooked up to the ignition. I'm trying to get the device operating to play with it and have it hooked up to a 13.8v DC power supply. I presume I need a small current on the ignition wire to activate the power. What is the simplest way I can do this? Can this wire be connected to the positive of the power supply or does it need to run through a relay?

You shouldn't need a relay for the ignition wire. You can connect directly, or install a simple toggle switch for ease of use.
