I need to wire an electric ram (actuator?, whatever you want to call it). It is a 2 wire setup. How does the wiring need to be laid out, as far as what type of relays, where the switch is connected and where the wires that drive the motor are connected. Must be able to reverse the polairty as the ram needs to go in and out. Thanks in advance for your help.
You'll need 2 standard Bosch-style 5 pin relays, and a spdt switch that is 'momentary on' in both directions. Hook up as follows- One leg of your ram goes to 87 on one relay. The other leg goes to 87 on the other relay. 30 on both relays go to power. Since only one relay will be supplying power at any given function, you can have just one lead- make sure it's large enough (for example, if your ram leads are 16ga, a 14ga for supply branching to a pair of 16ga near the relays)- supplying power for both. Remember to fuse near your source. 87a on both relays go to ground. Make sure these leads are the same size or bigger than the ram wires. 85 on both relays also go to ground- 18 gauge here is more than enough. For your switch, you can take power from a battery or ignition source, depending on how you want to control your ram. Place this lead- again, 18ga should suffice- on the center post of the switch. Both remaining posts go to the remaining 86's on the relays.
I am such an idiot- for the ram wires, they will go to 30- not the battery leads. The battery leads go to 87. Hook it up the other way around and you'll have a dead short.
