relay for neons in trunk

i would like to hook up 2 neon tubes in my trunk and have them connected to the trunk light (so that they turn on whenever the trunk is opened).  I know that the trunk light is negative so I just need to know how to wire up the relay in order to get this to work...is this correct?    +12v  for 30 and 86,  87 is the neons, and 85 would be the trunk light wire?   is this right cause i was told to cut the plug from the neons and put one side on 85 and the other on 86, then to power 30 and the trunk light is on 87...how can this work if 85 and 86 must be charged in oder to power the realy...how can the neons charge 85  and 86 if its not even turned on?   so which way is correct?

85 +12V, 86 -trigger trunk pin, 30 +12V, 87 +output to neon. The way you said to do it was right, what you were told was wrong.

so do i just put the positive side of the noens on 87 and then ground the other side?

Pos 12v  to pin 85 and 30

Neg input from your trunk pin switch to pin 86

Neon Pos to pin 87

Neon Neg to chasis ground

Okay im doing something similar, except my -12v is coming from my dome light so that when i open my doors, my neons go on. the question i have, is when i do this, will there be a way to put a switch somewhere so that i can turn them on when i want, like at night for driving around. and when the switch is off, i still want the relay to work, so that they come on when the door is open. I'm new to relays.. i fried a light already doing it with no relays. so i want to do it right this time.

Notice the diode if you don't put it in your domelight will come on even if the door is closed and you turn the switch on so don't forget it. Any basic 1 amp diode should be fine. Hope that helps.

I was the guy that made up the wiring diagram that Steber posted. The reason the relay (on the right in the diagram) is buzzing is that the dome light gradually fades when the doors are closed, it doesn't go off instantly. Is there a way to have the relay switch quickly even though the voltage drops gradually? Would a diode across the coil help (doesn't seem like it would, but maybe)?
