hi, I'm a new guy, but am needing help.

I'm have a positive 12 volt output from a remote starter that i need to convert to a negative 12 volt as my horn is negative 12 volts.

Someone told me i can use a regular auto relay and change the output of the relay to negaitve.

Can anyone pleast help me with the schematice on this?

Again, i have a +12volt output from remote start module, that has to be changed to a -12 input that will feed the horn circuit in the car.

thanks

POSITIVE INPUT ----> NEGATIVE OUTPUT
  • 87 & 86 -  CHASSIS ground
  • 30 - Ground OUTPUT
  • 85 - 12 volt INPUT
  • 87a - NOT USED

rye2,

Just to help you understand what you have a little better, you don't need -12V, you need a ground pulse rather than a 12V pulse. Most horn relays have a constant 12V on them and the ground is either connected (which blows the horn) or not connected (which doesn't blow the horn). The horn button in the steering column is actually a switch to ground connected to the horn or horn relay. As I believe Jeff is describing (I'm not as familliar with the pin numbers) the module will send a 12V pulse to operate the relay, which in turn connects a ground to the horn through the relay contacts.

Hot rod,

yes your explaination does ring some bells in my head, I recall that part about the ground pulse and the horn switch.

Velocity,

I'll go try that out, thanks for the help, I'll keep u all posted!

well I tried out what jeff suggested, and I admit i'm having a minor problem.

Here's what i did:

87&87 to chassis ground,

30 I assumed what is meant i connect this wire to the horn wire since it needs a negative pulse to operate.

85 is 12 volts from the remote start module pin that is to control the horn.

I put my volt meter on the remote starter output pin that is to go to the horn, and it measured 12 volts,  So i assume the 85 connects there.

Then I checked my ground for 87 &86 and i have that.

then I measured the input of 30 to the horn wire and that too is 12 volts.

when I set alarm off no horn goes off like it should.

I did try reversing the wires, hooked up 30 to the remote starter horn pin and 85 to the horn and it gave an instand blast on the horn.

and yes remote programming is correct, i redid it too.

i'm not sure why the horn isn't going off when I trip the alarm condition.

hmmmmm.

any ideas Jeff or anyone?

thanks

ATTENTION EVERYONE!

I overlooked one tiny thing while hooking up the relay, but it is fixed now and works great!  Thanks Jeff you were bang on with ur wiring.  I guess my lack of experience played me for a fool!

I do think I will opt for a siren thought as the horn chirping is VERY loud, especially when it disarms it's 3 long loud horn blasts.  The remote starter does have a temporary and even permanent chrip disable, however, when i program even the permanent chrip disable, the horn still chirps when disarmed.  I'm thinking MAYBE it's due to only having 1 door pin in use, while teh other 3 aren't being controlled yet (need a diode to throw in but don't have it so i'm using one door pin)  but I doubt it.  Maybe the unit is confused.

If i can find out HOW to disable the chriping like i want i'll stick with the horn.  We will see

i'll kep u guys up to speed.

thanks

ryan

Good going Ryan... it's nice to see that beginner installerare trouble shooting their problems and getting good results from it. Keep us posted.

hey ryan,

so are you saying that you hooked up your horn so that it will blow when your alarm goes off, along with your siren?  I want to do that, too, I think it's cool.

But you said that it also beeps when locking/unlocking the doors, even though you turned off the chirp?  Hmm, I didn't know that would happen.

Have you found a way around this?  That would be cool, but I don't want anything to chirp or beep when I lock/unlock.

Velocity,

Those problems i was having with the horn hooked up (see Aug 10 @3:23pm post) was all and ONLY caused because i didn't have the door pins diode isolated.  On Tuesday night I threw in 2 diodes on the door pins, as My car has one seperate for Drivers door and one wire that controls all other doors, and it worked perfectly.

I figured out that the reason WHY the Chirp delete wasn't working was because the alarm sensed that there was a current draw on the door pins ( please someone educate me on this) i think making it seem to the alarm that the doors were opened instead of closed.  I have a negative system so i assume that my door pins are +12volts when door is closed.

Feel free to offer me some education from the PROS in here!

lol

later

 ryan

p.s. CP, I don't have both horn and siren, I was haivng trouble with the horn set up so i thought my unit was messed up.  I was saying i might as well get a siren instead of the horn as i can live with the siren chirping but not horn.

Ya everythign is working well, Only problem i have found during my testing stages is that when i have the remote start going my front left speaker has engine noise going through it.  I'm not sure why exactly, i think it might be either a bad connection, or maybe i have current  flowing to a spot it doesnt' need to be going.  I'm going to look into this on the weekend as i have more time then.

I'll keep u posted.

bye,

ryan
