I want to ground the e-brake wire for the Clarion VRX935VD to a switch. But I also want it connect it to my e-brake light as well. But the only problem is that the light on my dash is constantly on and it is driving me crazy. Is there a way of doing it so that if I get pulled over I can show the cops that the tv will not work unless the e-brake is engaged, but also be able to drive around with the e-brake wire grounded through a switch? Any help will be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
I work for the State doing the installation of all State law enforcement vehicles including the highway patrol so I deal with them all day on a daily basis. I can tell you that where I am from if you got pulled over for video while driving it would be because they actually saw the video on. There is no law being violated just for having the unit installed. What I am getting at is if you were trying to show some cop that it wont work while driving, its because you got pulled over. If you got pulled over it will be because they saw the video on while the vehicle was going down the road. At that point all the switches in the world wont mean jack. Its your word against his...and if he came up from the rear and saw it through your back glass etc. hits record on the camera before pulling you over, your screwed anyway. Its called calculated risk just like illegal window tint =).
can't you just install a toggle switch? One way connects it to the ebrake wire, the other connects it directly to ground. I just grounded mine. I have a mustang though, so the TV is low enough to where you can't see it from behind, unless it's a police SUV
I could tell you how to do that, but isn't that function there for a reason?
Looking at a map or using the cell here and there is bad enough, but watching vidio while you're driving? Seems like one more distraction that's not worth having.
You simply want two modes:
1. your dash light is off, your ebrake is down, yet you can watch the TV
2. A:the dash light is ON, ebrake up, TV works or
B:dash light OFF, ebrake down, NO TV
Well, two different ways this can be done:
use a diode and a SPST switch or a DPST switch, each will do the same thing....

Lemme guess, the wire from the clarion which needs to be grounded to allow the video to show, you have it connected to BOTH the e-brake, and to a grounded switch. When you turn on the switch, your brake light lights up on your dash. To solve this, all you need is a diode. Connect the diode inline on the wire from the e-brake to the clarion. Make sure the cathode side (the band side) is facing the emergency brake.

Yes, there are different types of diodes. You'll need a 1 amp type 1N4001 diode. You can easily find them at your local radio shack for a few cents.
