I've installed my Whelen Strobes in my tail lights. I want these to be powered when my alarm is activated. Here's what I was thinking.... I know I missing something... if someone could let me know if I'm headed down the correct path.
1. Ground strobe neg
2. Attach + strobe power to 87a (fuse for the hell of it)
3. Tap turn signal + connect to 30 (turn sig. flashes when alarm is active)
4. Tap + Ignition wire (only hot when key is ON) connect to 86
What I'm thinking is, when the ignition is off, when the turn signal gets power, the strobes do too. When the ignition is on, the turn signal works as it should.
Thanks - Paul
What do you plan on doing with pin 85 of the relay?????? Without it you will not be able to energize the relay.
i forgot about this....85; not sure, newbie trying to figure it all out... any way, I have to get a timer relay b/c the strobe power supply takes a longer pulse to charge than the turnsignal sends.... any ideas what would work best.
simple starter kill setup will work for what you want not quite as bright as lights are capable of doing but will do what you want and make them flash when car is off with alarm or hazards.
pin 85 ground constant
pin 86 tap into igniton one wire
pin 87 not used
pin 87a wire from turnsignals positive
pin 30 wire to lights
your done this works cause when a positive and negative is passed on ether side of a standard relay it opens the curcit so no current can be passed through. and when there is not (car off ) the current can pass through. this setup open and closing will not infringe on any damage to car .
if you have an alarm that has starter kill i can tell you how to hook up the strobes so that when you arm(lock ) doors the strobes will get power and when you un arm and start the car they will not.
i did not read the whole thing before you may need a timed relay cause your dealing with strobes. sorry but this will work most of the time.
You are correct, the above would work fine. I set it up, but the power isn't enough for the strobe power supply. I'm going to add the relay for the starter kill... and pin 30 will either go to a timer circut or another relay. I'm thinking of seting it up so the alarm will go off for 5 seconds before the strobes get powered, and then once powered, the strobes will stay on for 15 seconds.... if the alarm is still going off after the 15 seconds of power, the strobes will stay off for 5 secs, then power for 15 and so on.
I've never used a timer relay... are the pins the same? Thanks
they should be.
Ok, so i've modified it a little bit... but not sure what to do. I'm wiring the ing. kill relay above. I've bought a Calrad Universal timer... which I'll wire 12v+ from pin 30. Now, there are three relay outputs from the timer... the wiring instructions don't really say what they do. They are: NC / C / NO..... This timer is generally used for home alarms, but i'm pretty sure it will work.
Anyone know which output to use?
Thanks
