This may sound stupid but I need a relay with an 87a terminal and I cant find one anywhere. Are they uncommon or something? I am installing progressive door locks and I apparently need one.

It is called a single pole double throw relay, you should be able to find them at an autoparts store or maybe radio shack.

AutoZone has them for like $5.. Last time I checked radio shack they only had the 4 pin.. Stop by any stereo shop they should sell you one.

Seems like no one has one, not autozone or radioshack.

If you can wait, go with partsexpress - they have a website and great prices.

a lot of vehicles use a 5 pin relay. A local salvage self serve salvage yard should be able to sell you one pretty cheap. A late 80's to mid 90's dodge full size van has them on the drivers side firewall --> actually 4 of them -- 2 on either side of the jackshaft. This is the easiest place I've found them. Along the same theory, you have to be able to buy them if one in your 92 dodge van went bad. I've also found that some relays with 5 pin, either have two 87 pins, or two 30 pins, so you should be careful if you do go looking at a salvage yard. Hope this helps

If your not a professional, why not?  You can save some cash, help the environment (reduce, reuse, recycle), and its not they they should ever go bad in a vehicle, unless the terminals start to rot.  I might be biased because my dad owns a self serve salvage yard, but its not a wearing part like a tire, so they should last the life of your vehicle... Just my 2/5ths of a nickle on the matter tho

Both options are good depending upon the application and the person(s).

My view on the matter is that anytime a critical system is being incorporated into an existing vehicle or electrical system.

You do not want to have any doubts as to the basics, whether they will last one year, or ten.

Given that the price for name brand Bosch relays can be had for only $0.99 at parts express, and other various on-line retailers.

It's not alot to pay for a peace of mind. In closing, relays do wear out, *contact arching* from the closing and opeing process, promotes corrosion within the relay contact patch.

If one was to obtain the relays from a salvage yard for free, or half the price, then that too is a great avenue to pursue.

Speaking only for myself, I would not go that route for a new installation where reliability and consistancy is the primary factor / objective

Just some things to consider.
