My questions are, does 87A get connected anywhere?  Doesn't seem like it.  And then, do I have to make a connection between 85 and 86 or is that just something internal to the relay?

Hi briandors, the diagram you have shows a changeover type relay.
You could use that type or a horn relay or a headlight relay.
All would do the job at hand.
As for pin 87a, just ignore it, it is not required for anything.
The connection between pins 85 and 86 are internal and are the schematic drawing’s way of showing that they make up the connections for the coil side of the relay.
