You can use the reverse lights as one step to make sure that it is not in that gear, but I don't know of a trigger that will tell you that your car is in gear. You could use some type of switch mounted to the shifter that shows it is in nuetral.

They sell manual trand command starters?  For all I know you can only safely use a remote start system on an automatic car.  On the viper autostarters they always state that it's for automatic cars.

I've been thinking of a way but have not found it yet.  I noticed that the ford focus tells you what gear you're in.  On that car you could probably look for a wire to tap into using a relay.  When it's in neutral it would close the circut allowing it to start the car. but this signal is probably not present when the car is off.

you could put little pin switches on each gear at the stick shifter so that if any of them is close it will not allow the car to turn on but this could be difficult to do.

If you don't know, now you know...ultrastart 1250m is a manual transmission remote starter. it interfaces with the parking brake and door triggers to give a fail safe remote start w/o poss of it starting in gear...here's how it works. the unit is always in safe mode until the time you are ready to use it and to put it in start mode, when you stop and put park brake on, you hit foot brake. when unit sees these two inputs together, it will chirp. then you exit the vehicle like you normally would, but when you take the keys out, it will stay running until you are out and the last door closes. obviously, for you to exit the vehicle while it is running, it HAS to be in neutral or it would jump and stall. the unit will remote start now unless a door is opened, then you have to put it back in start mode. the only difference between setting the mode and getting out of your car like you normally would is you have to tap the footbrake before taking the keys out. I install these all the time and they work perfectly. I actually installed an automatic unit on a manual once and the guy said,"oh, I never leave it in gear...ever!" and guess who's truck took off across the street in reverse and took out the neighbor's central air conditioning system... don't be fool, use your tools....
