The instructions to install this, say I need to hook it up to a true ignition source. What/where would that be be in a 2004 Alero? Also, depending on the "ignition lead" can I mount this in my trunk or is that unsafe? I am just installing an extra battery in my trunk.

You can get this wire at your ignition switch wiring harness. It is pink in color and a larger size wire. To test for it use only a DVOM because of the complex electronics used in the newer GM vehicles. It will test 0volts with the key off, 0volts with the key in the accessory position, 12volts in the on (run) position, and 12volts in the start (crank) position. The reason for ignition power? This is simply a very high current SPST relay that is used to connect all batteries when the engine is running for charging but also connects the starting battery to the electrical system during cranking. At the same time it isolates the cranking battery when you are just setting around playing the system with the engine off so it dont become discharged to the point it wont start the engine.
