I recently installed a trunk release to an existing unit that has a channel for a trunk release.
when the car is off the negative output only reads 7 volts or so and the relay wont activate therefore the trunk solenoid doesnt work.
when the car is on the output reads 13 volts and the relay activates and everything works as intended.
i just can't figure out what to do.. any suggestions?

Find another source of Power for the installed Unit. Find a source that reads 12v when the key is off. Maybe even try running the power lead to the battery.

Also look for a bad Ground.

When in doubt, try it out !

is it the negative output on the alarm brain reading 7 volts? what i would suggest is that you wire a relay with a good power and ground source to give the trunk pop the power it needs.
