When using a relay to power something that draws higher current, in my case a compressor, should it be hooked up to open and close the +12V or the ground? Does it matter?

I would think in theory, it shouldn't matter if you used it for the +12V or the ground.  But from a more practical standpoint, I think it would be safer to use the relay for the +12V source, especially for your intended use.

Thanks, for the response. I was thinking that functionally it shouldn't matter but I didn't really think about it from the safety aspect.
