Howdy - I am trying to sort out a remote battery cutoff switch that can be operated via a remote keyless entry with auxiliary channels.  I have a solenoid-style switch that interrupts main power when one of the switching terminals is grounded.  The standard installation uses a small toggle switch to connect to ground to switch power off.  I would like to use a negative pulse from a remote keyless entry to do this, rather than a switch.  I am assuming that I need to use a latching relay to set ground with one pulse, and open with another pulse.  The problem is that I don't know very much about latching relays and how they are operated.  I am looking at Magnecraft relays.  Do I need to use a dual coil 12V latching relay, or a single coil?  How would the wiring diagram look for this application?  I would like it to operate both "ON" and "OFF" with a pulse from the same source (to use only one channel), but could use two channels if necessary.  Thank you so much!

You can make a latch out of standard bosch relays and diodes using one of the diagrams on here.

Tragik - I tried to put one of these assemblies together, and could not get it to latch properly.  I was not able to see what I had done incorrectly, but nevertheless could not get it to function as desired.  The other issue with this arrangement is that the relay set is quite bulky, which is an issue in my application with very little spare room in the relay compartment.  I think that I need to go with an "official" latching relay, which is why I posted my question.  I don't have enough knowledge of these devices to determine what style to use, and how it should get wired up to my solenoid battery cutoff switch.  Thanks for the input, however.

using the VW relay may work fine for you, as it is less than 1.5" cube.

you'd need to test the requirements for the coil current though, not sure how much the keyless entry output you have supplies

if you are wanting to make a remote battery cut off, what is it going to be turning off? i take it not the power to all the vehicle as you would not be able to turn it back on with no power going to the alarm, for your remote to work.

i think he could power the keyless entry directly from the battery, hot/non-switched side of cutoff solenoid, and be ok.

Mark - exactly.  The plan is to connect the remote keyless entry to the battery side of the cutoff switch.  Using one of the available channels on the controller, I hope to be able to lock the doors, and then switch power off to the rest of the car.  If the keyless entry is also an alarm, the alarm will remain powered and active.  The reason for doing all of this is that the particular type of car that I am fiddling with has significant issues with battery drain because of some of the electrical device designs used.  Many owners of these cars have the typical cutoff switch with the big red handle or whatever, and this seems to be a little crude.  I would like to have the remote capability so that I don't have to fumble around with that.  A press of the remote, and all is shut down.  The cutoff switch that I plan to use shuts off power when the unit is grounded.  The purpose for the latching relay is to maintain a steady ground when pulsed by the keyless entry unit.  The cutoff switch restores power when the ground is removed.  Thanks for any guidance on latching relays.
