Long time lurker, first time posting. Let me start off by saying thanks for putting up this great board; it's an awesome resource.

I was hoping someone could possibly help me out with the following situation. I've got a 2001 Toyota mr2 which uses H4 bulbs (high/low beam on the same bulb). I would like to upgrade to the newer 2003+ headlight housings which use H7 & 9005 bulbs; the high/low beam are separated and operate differently. On the original models, EITHER highbeams OR lowbeams are on. For the newer version, BOTH lights stay on when the highbeam is activated. I would prefer to have the headlights operate the way they were intended from the factory, but this presents a slight wiring problem. I have found a diagram which claims to make a clean 'OEM' conversion.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to make any sense of the wiring diagram; I've run into a few problems:

1. First of all, it was orginally in German so I had to translate a lot of the terms. There is a chance some of the translation was done incorrectly.
2. I've gone over the schema a ton of times in my head, but there doesn't seem to be any possible way this would ever work. Am I mistaken?
3. The creator of the modification used a 2003+ factory diagram to illustrate the necessary changes. This illustration differs a bit from the 2001 model I have, so it adds to the confusion a little. I can provide the 2001 diagram if necessary.

Can you please post the original schematic for your 2001 MR2? Correct me if I am wrong, you would like to have both high and low beams on at the same time, right? I have looked at the images you uploaded and it seems to be a combination of the 2003 and 2201 wiring. It would work if you take the red-green wire and feed the two low beams from it. This would feed the low beams once the high beams were turned on illuminating on all four bulbs at one time.
My interpretation of the 2003 system is the low beams are always on and when the high beams are turned on the ground circuit for the high beams is completed through the switch.
I would expect the 2001 system to have two relays, one for the lows and one for the highs. The light switch would only need to control which relay is on and only allow one relay at a time to be on. Post the schematic so I can look at it. All that may be required to make all the bulbs work at one time is a diode. But I can't say for sure until I see the schematic.

Thanks for taking a look. You're absolutely right, I would like to have both sets of lights on at once. AFAIK, +12V from the red-green lead is only hot when the lowbeams are on.

I'm assuming that the other red-green lead on the german diagram (the one marked 'isolate') is actually supposed to be red-black for my model (+12V lowbeam).

I have no way to upload pics so I will describe what I would do in this case. I would use a relay with the coil, terminal 85, wired to the high beam power wire, R-L or R in this case I believe. You only need to use one of them not both. Terminal 86 of the relay would go to ground. I would then take power from the battery, add a 20 amp fuse, to terminal 30 of the relay. Terminal 87 of the relay would then go to the L wire (blue) in the 2001 schematic, which I believe to be the low beam power wire.

I have made the following assumptions:
1. All my notes are based on the 2001 schematic
2. You will be using a Bosch type relay.
3. The wires identified by as R and R-L are the high beams.
4. The wire identified as L is the power wire supplying the low beams.

You will need to verify that I have identified the correct high and low beam wiring. If I have not you will have to revise the wiring accordingly.

Please forgive me, but I took a better look at the german diagram and realized I made a big mistake. The european version of the mr2s use a switched ground setup. Unfortunately, the american mr2s have daytime running lights so the harnesses are switched power.

Of course, this makes the entire german diagram ineffective for me; I'll go with your suggestion. Is there any chance I can avoid the flicker on the lowbeams between the relay switch?
