Customer has 2006 Mustang. He wants the tail lights to work sequentially. When he hits the brakes he wants the tail lights to work like this

when you hit the brake light up 1 then 2 then 3 and hold the lights until brake is released. He wants the same thing when using turn signals or hazards and to work the same way.
Can this be done with relays? If so how many and can someone make a diagram?

If the 06 is like the older ones you'll have to swap out two of the light sockets, as two of the bulbs have dual filaments, and one bulb is just a tail light (not a brake light).

I'm sure you could do it with a 4-6 timing relays and a handful of SPDT relays, but you really need to consider the liability involved in having that many relays control a very important part of the car.
If a relay fails and his brake lights quit working and it causes an accident I think we all know who they would go after.
You should be able to eliminate the timing relays by using some discreet components such as 555 timers or monostable vibrators. That would improve reliablity by cutting down on moving, mechanical parts.
If I were doing it I would base it all around a > 1mghz processor and add lots of intelligence (and maybe even output checking) to the system for great reliability.
