Yeah, that is a pretty cool feature, isn't it? You can make your own setup with two ordinary relays and a little bit of wiring.

The only difference is that in your cousin's truck, the radio will turn itself off after a few minutes even if he never opens a door, meaning his battery will never go dead. Your setup with the relays won't have this safety feature, but the only way to kill your battery would be to climb out a window when you park!

Look at the "Relays" section of this site. I think they have the setup for this somewhere in there.

I figure I could sit down and figure out how to do it with relay's, I just thought maybe someone had done it before and knew exactly what to do. Thanks for your input...at least I'm pretty sureI know it can be done.

I noticed in my cousin's 2000 SIilverado that his deck does not shut off until you open a door...is there any way I could create the same effect in my 89 Full-Size Cheyenne?

Ok, you'll need two Bosch-type relays. Here's how the wiring goes:

Relay#1
#85 goes to the door trigger wire
#30 goes to ground
#86 goes to 12V constant
#87A goes to #85 on relay #2
#87 is not used

Relay #2
#85 goes to #87A on relay #1
#30 goes to 12V (jump to #86 on relay #1)
#86 jumps to #87 (same relay)
#87 then goes to the accessory wire that runs the radio
#87A is not used

When you shut your truck off, everything that is on the circuit that runs the radio will stay on, until you open the door of course. Hope this helps.

oh yea, what side of the door trigger do I need to use...positive or negative..or does it matter?

Your truck should just have one trigger, and it's negative. If you want you can just get it from an interior light, or get it from the door pin, whichever is easier.

Unless the domelight happens to automatically come on when unlocking----if so, this would cause the radio to turn off right away; you'd have to go directly to a door trigger wire.

jump 86 to 87 on relay 2 same one?????? wouldn't it go back on when the doors close again??

No. When you turn the vehicle on, it energizes the relay, making #30 (12V) and #87 contact. By jumping #87 and #86, you are in a sense now powering the relay through #30. So when you take the vehicles accessory power away, the coil still has 12 volts because of #30, which makes the relay and accessory circuit have power. When you open the door, you are momentarily taking away the ground needed to make relay #2 work, and it turns off along with the accessry circuit. When you close the door, you are giving the ground back to relay #2 but now the 12 volts is missing so it won't turn back on. Hope this makes sense.

check the other thread on the same topic...  12volt put together a diagram that does this but also keeps the radio from turning off if the key is still in and you open the door and also only keeps the radio running when you turn off the ignition (rather than everything powered by the acc. wire).

The diagram I gave would not shut the stereo off if the door was opened, nor would the12volt's second one. The only difference between his diagram and mine it that his was designed to just power the stereo, not the whole accessory circuit. His diagram seems more logical.
